A headteacher at Ulwazi High School in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa has sparked outrage after reportedly forcing schoolgirls to admit to their parents that they were gay last week.

The incident occurred at Ulwazi High School

The headteacher, Nomampondomise Kosani, reportedly gathered 38 schoolgirls aged between 14 and 18 after finding two of them kissing in class.

She then forced them to admit to their parents, who she had summoned earlier, that they were gay and to point out their girlfriends.

The Eastern Cape department of education expressed shock and dismay at the incident. Its spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima, said that the headteachers action was against established policies.

He said: "We have opted to send our officials for the special programmes unit to go and conduct advocacy campaigns and implement programmes that sensitise staff members about the rights of gays."

Activists, including the parents whom the headteacher summoned, said the headteachers action could form the basis of discrimination at school and that the schoolgirls' orientations were private. South Africa has laws in place for the protection of gays against discrimination.
