"I can just look at you and tell you that you are 'too big' to qualify. You shouldn’t even bother to apply," a health insurance agent allegedly told Horton.

This broke her heart into pieces and left her in tears of pain. The cruel experience, she says, was a motivating factor. She was forced to change her lifestyle drastically and with immediate effect.

"That was the turning point for me," says Horton, a five-foot-11 who currently weighs 178 pounds (roughly 77 Kg). But it has not been an easy journey.

After Horton was denied health insurance cover, she went back home with one mission in mind, and that was the 'slim-possible mission'.

She began by putting an end to her three fast food meal-a-day habit. Instead, she bought fruits and vegetables. She embarked on a strict regime of healthy eating and exercise.

"I maintained a food journal, consumed about 1,500 calories a day and stuck to a diet of clean meets, fruits and vegetables," says Horton.

After she discovered that she weighed 386lbs, Horton, pictured recently, embarked on weight loss mission

About nine months later, she had shed off 80 ponds (36 Kg).

"It dropped yes, but when you are 386 pounds and you lose only 80 pounds, you are in the 300 bracket, which is still unacceptable," says Horton.

So the journey to lose even more fat continued. She started going to the gym and working out at least five times every week. This continued for the next two years as she monitored how much weight was left to be shed off.

Three years later, Horton had lost over 200 pounds (90 Kg), almost half of her original body weight (of about 386 pounds or 175 Kg).

" I am very determined and strong minded about it. I work extra hard to maintain my current shape and weight," says Horton.

Her advice to those who are still struggling with weight loss is that they should go hard on themselves. Gym, according to Horton, should be more important than a friend's birthday party.
