- The medics tried to plead with the pissed off dad to let her daughter proceed with the treatment, but he completely refused, and here is why
The fate of a 10-year-old girl from Bangladesh who was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition called 'tree man syndrome' is now unknown after the girl's father suddenly stopped her treatment and took her out of the hospital.
Sahana Khatun went through her very first operation last month as doctors tried to remove the bark-like growths that had developed on her face.
The medics said a number of surgeries were still needed to completely get rid of the disturbing growths. The girl, they say, is suffering from an extremely rare condition referred to, in medical terms, as epidermodysplasia verruciformisa.
However, her father, Mohammad Shahjahan, panicked. He feared that her daughter will never be cured and therefore decided to stop her treatment and took her out of the hospital.
Khatun is believed to be the first female in the world to suffer from this condition, which is popularly known as “tree man syndrome”. She was being treated for free by the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Doctors reportedly hailed the initial surgery as a huge success. But the girl's father disagreed, saying it had only aggravated her daughter's condition and he wanted to spare her from any further procedures.
“They removed the bark-like growths and they grew again more thick and strong. I am scared. They said my daughter needed another 8-10 operations. But what’s the guarantee that she will be cured after that?” the father lamented.
Samanta Lal Sen, head of the hospital’s burns and plastic surgery unit, said he wished they could keep the girl in hospital for further surgery, but her father, a poor labourer, totally refused.
“He left with his daughter, complaining there was no progress. We asked them to stay a few more weeks for treatment,. He refused,” says Sen.
For the time being, nobody knows for sure what will happen to Khatun, now that she is out of treatment with her condition getting worse.
