NAIJ.com gathered that some armed men trailed an unsuspecting victim and his wife in a Camry saloon car after the couple made a withdrawal at the bank. They shot him dead in front of Imo state government house after taking the money from him.
The robbers who had been trailing the unsuspecting victim, caught up with him before he got to the Okigwe roundabout which is merely a stone throw from the government house. Before taking money from their victim, they shot frantically into the air to announce their presence before approaching him.
The victim, who was reportedly uncooperative with them, was shot dead for putting up some resistance. After this, the money was taken from him before they sped off.
An eyewitness who was shocked beyond words narrated the incident. He disclosed that the police officers at the roundabout close to the government house took off as soon as the robbers shot into the air.
"I was at the newspaper stand across the road, just before the Okigwe roundabout, around 11a.m, when I heard a gunshot and then two young men in a Camry car blocked a man and his wife driving in another car.
“They asked the man to hand over the money. The woman ran out of the car, but the man refused to hand over the money to them. One of the robbers shot him three times and collected the money from him. I don’t know if he died.”
Another witness confirmed the statement of the first witness regarding the dispersal of the police officers.
“I was four cars behind. When I heard gunshots, it dawned on me that those in the Camry were robbers, because the way they overtook me made me wonder where they were hurrying to.
After snatching the money, they were shooting into the air, which sent people running in different directions, including the policemen at the Okigwe roundabout junction."
The public relations officer for the state police confirmed the incident and revealed that the victim was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri.
NAIJ.com is in awe that a crime as serious as this could be committed in front of Imo state government house. One would expect that the security at that place would be tight so that thieves and thugs would not be able to able to operate at that zone.
It is truly sad that the victim, whose identity was not disclosed had to die. The NAIJ.com video below reveals the thoughts of some Nigerians towards the leaders in the nation:
