- A US great-great grandmother has proven that age is nothing but a number
- She has graduated with a university degree
- She plans to study for another one
The old adage that age ain't nothing but a number rings truer when the story of 70-year-old Shirley Fuller is told.
The great-great grandmother proudly earned her Associate in Applied Science degree in Business Administration from Wake Tech Community College in North Carolina, US on May 8.
When asked what prompted her to study at her advanced age, Shirley happily said: “I didn’t want to sit at home. It was boring! Now that my grandkids are getting their degrees, Grandma Shirley is too!”
Shirley also told CNN's Inside Edition that she didn't continue with her studies when she had a third child many years ago, opting to work instead.
However, she felt a sense of unfinished business and yearned to obtain a college degree, something her mother had always wanted.
She said: "My mom always wanted me to go to college and I felt ashamed I didn't go. If my mom were still living, she would be delirious. As a child of my mother, I did not want to disappoint her any longer."
What's more heartwarming is that she isn't done yet. She said she plans to return to Wake Tech to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice Technology.
Way to go, grandma! What an inspiration she is.
