Police officers in Bayelsa have arrested one Stephen Ogho-Oghene Akpata, a Nigerian man who just returned from Australia for reportedly killing his wife.
The deceased, Onyinye, was said to have been an employee of Glo before her demise. Her husband had attacked her on grounds of being unfaithful in their marriage.
Amba Asuquo, the commissioner of police in Bayelsa, revealed that Akpata was arrested in Lagos while he was trying to run to Ghana. Police got wind of the incident after a man identified as Moses Awo complained about the 33-year-old woman not turning up in the office on Wednesday, August 16.
A team of police officers went over to her apartment and found the poor lady in a pool of blood. Asuquo stated that the deceased had marks on her body; her head, face and neck showed that she was strangled as the cord of a pressing iron was tied around her neck. She was also stabbed with a knife.
A three-quarter knickers was found at the scene of the crime. There were blood stains on the knickers and this was the lead for the police. They tried finding out who was with the poor lady before her death. They also discovered she recently had a court marriage with Akpata.
When the police got in touch with him, he told them he was out of town. Meanwhile, he was trying to get out of the country. It was also discovered that he spent a lot of money on the deceased before her death. They reportedly moved from one hotel to the other.
The police officers also got in touch with some of the hotels they lodged in. During the course of their investigation, they found out he used taxis most during this time as he does not have a car. The taxi drivers were contacted. One of them confirmed he wore the same knickers.
The police suspected that he would try leaving for Ghana or Republic of Benin. They got in touch with the embassies to notify them. He escaped from the Ghanaian embassy and escaped to Badagry where he was said to have been arrested.
