Corps member dies after refusing to give his phone to gunmen (photos)

A corps member identified as Ekene Uwaoma has passed away after he was shot in Owerri, Imo state.

Legit.ng gathered that the youth corper died on Monday, October 16, after he refused to give unknown gunmen his phone.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 8:30pm at Ama-wire junction in Owerri.

According to The Punch, Uwaoma was returning to his residence in company of his friend, simply identified as MacDonald.

It was gathered that the 23-year-old was a graduate of Imo State University who studied history and international studies.

The 23-year-old, who hailed from Umudo-Anara in Isiala Mbano local government area of Imo, was serving in Ogun state. Uwaoma had left Ogun to visit his mother identified as Mary.

According to MacDonald, the deceased was rushed to the hospital after he was shot and was confirmed dead by doctors.

He said: “We were returning home from where we went to buy food. Suddenly, four boys bearing arms stopped and asked us to surrender our phones. I quickly gave them mine, but Ekene (Uwaoma) refused to surrender his phone. They started struggling and I ran away. They shot him on the chest and ran away. They also shot into the air to scare people away.”

The young man explained that he was scared when they shot his friend, adding that he is unable to forget what happened.

MacDonald said: “The gunmen didn’t go with his phone. It was a pity. This was the first time somebody was killed in my presence. I am heartbroken. His picture keeps appearing in my mind. I can’t bear it.”

Chris Ezike, the Imo state police commissioner who confirmed the incident revealed that an investigation has been launched to bring the criminals to justice.
